We have just returned from the exhibition and symposium “Epicentro Retracing the Plains” presented during the vernissage of the Venice Biennale from June 1st - 4th, 2011.

Epicentro was positioned on the Zattere, a wide waterfront promenade in Venice in the Dorsoduro area at the University of Ca' Foscari, Venice and featuring artworks by John Hitchcock in collaboration with the Dirty Printmakers of America: Joseph Velasquez, Emily Arthur Douglass, Ryan O’Malley, John S. Hancock, Melanie Yazzie and curated by Nancy Marie Mithlo. A big thank you to Paul Baker Prindle and Sarah Anne Stolte for all their help with the exhibition!

In preparation for our exhibition Epicentro, Emily Arthur Douglass and I spent 3 weeks disseminating small give away prints as print offerings to the architectural spaces and land. Emily made rubbings from the walls and grounds of Venice for a series of prints and drawings. It was an honor to be in Italy and we feel very fortunate to have this opportunity to disseminate prints in Venice!

At night Emily and I projected temporary video projections in quiet, silent compos while O'Malley took the streets with his mandala prints.

Hitchcock uses the print medium with its long history of social and political commentary to explore relationships of community, land, and culture. The four-day multimedia installation Epicentro consists of prints and video that mediate the trauma of war and the fragility of life. Images of U.S. military weaponry are combined with mythological hybrid creatures from the Wichita Mountains of western Oklahoma to explore notions of assimilation and control. The tradition of making and gifting will be enacted during a print “give-away” with the arts collaborative The Dirty Printmakers of America.

The symposium Convergence on June 1st, 5pm – 7pm at the Casa del Cinema, Palazzo Mocenigo - San Stae 1990 30125 Venezia, addresses Hitchcock’s themes of exchange and traditional gifting in the context of fertile border zones where translations are never direct, but always fraught with multiple meanings. The history of Venice as a center of trade and cultural exchange mirrors the complexity of encounters in the American West –Hitchcock’s home. Leading artists and cultural theorists will explore indigenous perspectives on the meaning of gifting and collaboration through film presentations and discussions.

Wind On Earth celebrates the artwork and perspectives of four contemporary Native American artists, Neal Ambrose-Smith, John Hitchcock, America Meredith, & Melanie Yazzie. These four artists will have their work exhibited at the Haydon Art Center from March 17 – May 7. From Wisconsin, Colorado and New Mexico, the artists will be residing in Lincoln, NE the week of March 28 – April 1. During their week-long residence they will be creating artwork in studios located throughout Lincoln, including McPhee Elementary School ( & Community Learning Center), Park Middle School, Lincoln High School, and the UNL Art Department. This unique artist-in-residence program will put artists into schools, directly influencing students of all ages. In addition to their dedication in the studio, artists will be giving a presentation of their artwork along with a round table discussion, moderated by Thomas Gannon, Associate Professor of English & Native American Studies at UNL, at the Sheldon Museum of Art on Tues. March 29 @ 5:30pm. There will be a reception following the panel discussion. On Thursday, March 31, the Indian Center will host a pot-luck dinner followed by a dancing performance. The four artists also will be in attendance at Haydon’s First Friday gallery reception on April 1st from 6-8:00. All events are free and open to the public.

Wind On Earth is an exhibition and artist residency program that is one of a kind, bringing awareness of Native American art and issues to the Lincoln community through creativity and interaction.

Sue Gollifer, the artistic curator of the project, has invited curators from nine countries to select printed works from some of the most innovative contemporary printmakers in the field. Hot Plate focuses on installation and unframed work, seeking to position prints as objects and site-specific pieces. A number of the artists have moved away from the wall all together, using new materials, substrates and applications such as cloth, synthetic paper and metal. By approaching contemporary printmaking in the widest possible way, Hot Plate sparks a lively conversation about process, technique and technology within a continuously evolving area of the visual arts. Here the emphasis is on testing the perceived boundaries of the medium, breaking out of the literal and metaphorical ‘frame’ and exploring new formats which actively engage with the gallery space. It also opens up the possibilities for prints to move beyond the gallery walls and engage with modern street culture.

Art Industry is pleased to announce CACHE, a major exhibition of 28 Madison artists at the Kroger Grocery Warehouse, 634 West Main Street, in downtown Madison. Works from diverse disciplines and media will be represented; video, photography, sculpture, installation, printmaking, painting, and drawing. The exhibition will fill 16,000 square feet on the 3^rd and 4^th floors of the Kroger Warehouse, built in 1917, and now being restored by Delta Properties.

Josh MacPhee has just released Paper Politics: Socially Engaged Printmaking Today, a major collection of contemporary politically and socially engaged printmaking. This full color book showcases over 200 international artists; an eclectic collection of work by both activist and non-activist printmakers who have felt the need to respond to the monumental trends and events of our times.

Paper Politics: Socially Engaged Printmaking Today is a major collection of contemporary politically and socially engaged printmaking. This full color book showcases print art that uses themes of social justice and global equity to engage community members in political conversation. Based on an art exhibition which has traveled to a dozen cities in North America, Paper Politics features artwork by over 200 international artists; an eclectic collection of work by both activist and non-activist printmakers who have felt the need to respond to the monumental trends and events of our times.

Paper Politics presents a breathtaking tour of the many modalities of printing by hand: relief, intaglio, lithography, serigraph, collagraph, monotype, and photography. In addition to these techniques, included are more traditional media used to convey political thought, finely crafted stencils and silk-screens intended for wheat pasting in the street. Artists range from the well established (Sue Coe, Swoon, Carlos Cortez) to the up-and-coming (Favianna Rodriguez, Chris Stain, Nicole Schulman), from street artists (BORF, You Are Beautiful) to rock poster makers (EMEK, Bughouse).

Golden Parachutes is pleased to present Get Free %, group exhibition that experiments with applying alternative modes of economic exchange to a fine arts context. Get Free % is a platform to explore the commodity status of fine art and how disrupting this balance affects ideas surrounding comfort and value, as well as a practical call for artists and cultural producers to envision creative solutions for commodity exchange in a rapidly changing world.

All artwork will be for sale, but cash will not be accepted. Instead, each artist has determined a barter that they will accept in exchange for their work. This can be anything from a practical work exchange or conceptual action to a material necessity (or frivolity).

Thomas Pynchon describes paying for something in his opus Gravity’s Rainbow as a "primal American act” in which the payer feels ”most deeply himself." While paying is indisputably an international act, Pynchon correctly assesses the ease and comfort that paying for something can lend to a social transaction.

Get Free % intends to explore what happens on both sides of the transaction when that comfort is taken away. The exhibition presents work from European and American artists working in a variety of media. In addition to works on paper by Gert Jan-Akerboom, Steve Lambert, Little Friends of Print Making, Jaybo Monk, and Tar Art Rat, the exhibition will present three interactive projects.

American artist Cassie Thornton will present her Barter System Beauty Salon, an ongoing performance in which the artist gives a manicure based on an image chosen from a library of art books in exchange for a written description of beauty. Golden Parachutes is pleased to be the first European franchise for this Situationist pyramid scheme. Anarchist Avon invites visitors to pamper each other while discussing the mysterious permanence of beauty.

David Horvitz will present a series of five sequential prints of a sunset in Palos Verdes, California. Each photo has a twin which will be displayed in a local business on Sonnenallee. After the exhibition closes, the five photographs will continue to hang anonymously in Neukölln. Upon request, a map can be made of both the location in Palos Verdes and the photographs on Sonnenallee.

John Hitchcock’s Epicenter is an immersive, collaborative print environment that can be disseminated across borders via the post or internet. Working with the contents of an interactive “art tube” sent from Madison, Wisconsin, visitors to Golden Parachutes will work together to create a large print edition of repeated patterns. The images used will be determined by and related to topical international social or political events. Printing will begin at 4pm on October 1st and continue through the vernissage.John Hitchcock’s EpicenterGet Free % is curated by Jesi Khadivi and Paul Tyree-Francis, the co-directors of Golden Parachutes, with the assistance of Tar Art Rat. TAR ART RAT is a Berlin based curator and artist. He has curated and participated in exhibitions in Germany and the United States since 1998. He is the founder of Post Google, a collection of tiny text-based echoes disguised as an (art) project disguised as a weblog disguised as an art project and/or somewhat tangible art end product. Printmaking has changed over the years and it reflects the pluralistic direction and approach that artists take from 3D works, sculptures and installations to traditional additions to prints that are hand printed on a single plate. It really represents technical and conceptual standpoints. Printmaking has a very strong tradition as a voice for artists for commentary and social constructs. Younger emerging artists are showing their intersections of print and media, providing a survey of things for printmaking. Printmaking allows artists to cross boundaries, borders, and socio-political issues. The concept of Matrix helps define the ideas very loosely that the impressions in the show are derived from another source.

Titled “Multiple x Multiple,” the exhibition will offer a survey of innovative practices in contemporary printmaking stressing the aesthetic, conceptual, social and political role of the multiple. The exhibition will present printmaking in its broadest terms, encompassing uses of print media that are intended for both art galleries and public spaces. The exhibition will include works that use traditional processes and materials and others that involve experimental forms, from sculptural prints and installation works, as well as uses of print media in the creation of time arts. Some of the works in the exhibition stress the role of the print as a vernacular form, either in relation to popular print media such as comics, as a part of a new or alternative economic system, or as a form of creative self publishing. Taken as whole, the exhibition offers an image of contemporary printmaking that is grounded in traditional forms, but includes a variety of new media and democratic forms of practice that often push art out of the galleries and museums and into the world at large.

Honoring the Warrior: Combat Paper on the Black Hawk Trail @ UW-Madison

Combat Paper was at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Art Lofts Paper Mill from September 30 - October 4

Robert Possehl and the Combat Paper Project conducted a series of paper projects with local veterans and students. Events included papermaking workshops and a public presentation.
What is Combat Paper?
Combat Paper is made using uniforms worn while on tour during war. The uniforms are cut into pieces, cooked and macerated in a Hollander beater to make paper pulp. The pulp is then formed into paper sheets. Combat Paper has been used to make broadsides, books and personal journals, and the base for other printing processes.
What is Combat Paper used for?
War veterans use the process of making Combat Paper as a means to reconcile their experiences while engaged in conflict once they return to civilian life. The process encourages veterans to reconcile their experiences through the making of paper art.

Combat Paper is made in honor of all men and women involved in War. It is created as a means of dealing with the experiences; it offers hope and support to those who are currently involved in combat, in offering that when they return home there is a vehicle for them to express their experiences and reclaim their lives.

The story of the soldier, the Marine, the men and the women and the journeys within the military service in a time of war is the basis for this project. The goal is to utilize art as a means to help veterans reconcile their personal experiences as well as broaden the traditional narrative surrounding service, honor and the military culture.

Through papermaking workshops veterans use their uniforms worn in combat to create cathartic works of art. The uniforms are cut up, beat and formed into sheets of paper. Veterans use the transformative process of papermaking to reclaim their uniform as art and begin to embrace their experiences as a soldier in war.

The Combat Paper Project is based out of Green Door Studio in Burlington, VT and has traveled throughout the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, providing veterans' workshops, exhibitions, performances and artists' talks. This project is made possible by a multifaceted collaboration between artists, art collectors, academic institutions and combat veterans.
Through ongoing participation in the papermaking process, combat papermakers are attempting to progress from creating works specific to their military experiences to expressing a broader vision on militarism and society. The work reflects both the anger of the past and hope for the future. Through this collaboration between civilians and veterans, a much-needed conversation is generated regarding our responsibilities to the returned veteran and an understanding of the dehumanizing effects of warfare.

The story of the fiber, the blood, sweat and tears, the months of hardship and brutal violence are held within those old uniforms. The uniforms often become inhabitants of closets or boxes in the attic. Reclaiming that association of subordination, of warfare and service into something collective and beautiful is our inspiration. Drew Cameron.

The Combat Paper Project is a collaboration initiated by Drew Matott and Drew Cameron, involving war veterans, activists and artists.

Robert Possehl's Black Hawk Paper Trail Project creates paper from recently harvested plant fibers from the Black Hawk Trail through Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa. During the Madison CPP participants will make projects form Black Hawk plant fibres gathered in Madison. Saturday, October 3rd (1838) is the anniversary of Black Hawk's Death.

My artworks were featured in Num_errance : outdoor exhibit of large format digital artworks at the 6th edition of the Biennale internationale d’estampe contemporaine de Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Canada from June 21 to September 6, 2009.

Located on the Place de l'Hotel de Ville, this public art project consists of a walk where visitors are free to move, to watch and absorb the works proposed. This large-scale outdoor exhibit took place over a period of three months, from June to September, on the city hall’s esplanade.

If your in Silver Spring, Maryland and Washington D.C. area come check out three bodies of work I will exhibit at PYRAMID ATLANTIC ART CENTER'S Main and Kunst Vault galleries from August 1 - October 3, 2009.

In the the Main Gallery, I will exhibit Moving Targets/Objetivos Moviles consist of large banners, that I created in collaboration with one hundred artists from both North and South Americas during a residency at the Proyecto’ace, International Center for Visual Arts in South America, Buenos Aires, Argentina.Also in the the Main Gallery, I will present Impratically Political, a series of screen prints that depict images of mythological hybrid creatures and military weaponry based on my childhood memories exploring notions of good and evil.
Lastly, in the Kunst Vault Project Room, John Hitchcock will present a collaborative video titled BLANCOS. The video, co-created with artists Matt Wead and Federico Signorelli, deals with war and death, more precisely the annihilation that wars evoke. By referencing images as diverse as the buffalo, Francisco Goya’s The Third of May 1808, and Stanley Dorien’s film The Little Prince, images of the 30,000 disappeared people in Argentina, as well as imagery from today’s conflicts, the artists, confront the viewer with the cause and effect as well as the mindset of communal violence. The sounds of 80’s/90’s death metal band Slayer and Tango music intertwine for the sound-scape.

We just took an amazing trip to Japan (May 31 to June 7th, 2009) with Melanie Yazzie, Emily Author Douglas, Melissa Bob, Yazzie Family, and Verna Billiman family.
On Sado Island we were hosted by the Ao Family. We visited The Birth of the Sado Woodcut Print Village Museum where Melanie Yazzie gifting a set of the folio Another US and Another New Zealand to the Museum. We also toured the Kodo Drum Institute, the Toki Forest Park, and the Kanai-yoshi elementary School on Sado Island.

On June 4th will be depart Sado Island by ferry and headed to Tokyo. We were hosted by the Hagiwara Family at the Choukouji Temple in Tokyo where we met an incredible group of creative people who we gifted several prints and received many artworks.

Rebellious Integration toys with the contradiction of a printmaker's continuing subsistence in contemporary art culture and the mores of our society. Although many printmakers work to integrate themselves into the social ranks-- working mainstream jobs, teaching in academia, etc.-- we at the same time continually find ways to be subversive, to challenge the rubric of each institution that we labor so hard to pervade.

Check out the Wisconsin Books To Prisoners Art Show at The Project Lodge, 817 E Johnson St., Madison, WI 53703, ph: 608-442-5339 The show is open 1am - 5pm, M-F, until Feb. 5th.
Wisconsin Books to Prisoners (WBTP) is a nonprofit cooperative sponsored by Rainbow Book Cooperative (www.rainbowbookstore.org). Their goals and mission are described at the Books to Prisoners link at Rainbow Book Coop site. They send donated books to prisoners in Wisconsin and other states, in response to prisoner's letters - knowing that prison libraries are very poorly funded, and that even prisoner's access to the libraries is restricted. WBTP attempts to get books to the prisoners that they can keep in their cells, pass on to others, or donate when they're finished. Interestingly, the most requested book is a dictionary, and requests range from popular fiction and urban fiction to history to instruction manuals to art books, and many others.

WBTP often receives art work from the prisoners in thanks for the books. They have saved these works, and this exhibition is the result. In addition there will be a set of 20 silk-screen prints with prison themes created by different artists under the sponsorship of Justseeds Visual Resistance Artists Cooperative for the tenth anniversary of Critical Resistance, a prison abolitionists movement. Other local artists will also be displaying works in support of WBTP.

Got my first color printed for the print "They Will Rise (Warbird)". Printing the black layer today and the relief cut below. I set some type on one of the amazingly large letterpress with plans to print relief in the afternoon. Yeah!

They Will Rise cutting The last of only a few, they are remodeling the houses. The current bathroom has a lift up shower- in-the-floor thing that you have to either hop over, close up or fall into. Love it!

PRESS RELEASE: While Americans and the rest of the global community are intensely focused on the outcome of the 2008 presidential election, artists are also struggling with the point and counterpoint of the political compass in our nation’s capital. As a way of delivering personal responses and insights about our sense of conscience, including cultural identity and political decision-making, George Mason University’s Art and Visual Technology (AVT) department is presenting an exhibition titled “The Conscience of A Nation: Sid Chafetz Leads The Way”, curated by Helen Frederick, AVT professor and coordinator of printmaking.

“The Conscience of A Nation” features the work of a group of regional and invited artists from states such as Ohio, Tennessee and Wisconsin, who have been asked to exhibit their visual commentaries about our community, particularly to investigate the psyche of survival instincts and emergency situations that grow from the consequences of the political actions of our leaders. “I conceived the exhibition as a way of sharing discourse and collaborating with other artists, including younger artists, at a time when transformation is critically needed in the world,” Frederick said. “The nation’s capital is a Petri dish for shared boundaries of cultural and political awareness. Mason seemed a very suitable place to make visible the psychic conditions growing from our deep personal and universal concerns that have erupted around the time of the election.”

The show is anchored around artist and printmaker Sid Chafetz’s provocative digital print “Walter Reed Hospital”. This 48 x 96” work was inspired by the Walter Reed Army Medical Center neglect scandal, and juxtaposes images of amputees and replacement limbs with the heads of George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and Condoleeza Rice positioned on athletic bodies in motion. “I’ve been very critical of this administration and its behavior and I thought an absurd image might express my feelings better than a factual image based on reality,” Chafetz said.

For more than 60 years, Chafetz has created art shaped by the political events that define our culture and determine our survival. His work is displayed at the Museum of Modern Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Columbus Museum of Art and the Dahlem Museum in Berlin, among others. Chafetz said that his work is inspired by Rembrandt “for his deep sympathy of human beings” and Francisco Goya, whose work “was consistently critical of war and its consequences.”

As a run up to "ART SURGE II: THE ART OF DEMOCRACY", a public screenprinting action, some of Madison's leading printmakers will hold a public screenprinting action at the Social Justice Center on Williamson Street, during the Willy Street Fair on Saturday, September 20.

Led by UW Associate Professor John Hitchcock, along with Sam Johnson of Firecracker Studios, woodblock printers Steve Chappell and Eric Hagstrom, Lester Dore and others, members of the public are invited to try their hand at creating silkscreen posters for the upcoming "Art Surge II: The Art Of Democracy" exhibit, to be held at the SJC in October (info below for this event).

These posters will be distributed throughout Madison, and at a national level, to promote the "Art Of Democracy" series of nationally coordinated exhibits throughout the fall and winter of 2008, in the run up to the presidential elections in November.

MEDICINE PARK -- Funeral service for Anita Joy Hitchcock, 73, longtime Medicine Park resident, will be at 11 a.m. today at Comanche Nation Funeral Home Chapel.

Mrs. Hitchcock died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at her home.

Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

She was born Feb. 13, 1935, in Lawton, to John Deusom and Peggy Joy Pohocsecut Reid. She attended Riverside and Elgin schools. She married James J. Hitchcock on July 13, 1954, in Duncan. They made their home in Medicine Park. She worked as a nurse's aide for Comanche County Memorial Hospital. She also worked for Community Action as a case worker, and was a member of the Comanche Nation. She was a member of Mount Scott Comanche United Methodist Church, and enjoyed attending pow-wows, sun dance, attending her children's and grandchildren's sporting events and serving as head lady dancer at various tribal dances.

Survivors include her husband, Jim J. Hitchcock; a daughter and son-in-law, Jamie Sue and Scott Seifert, Sr., of Windermere, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law: James Richard and Judy Hitchcock, of Medicine Park; and John William Hitchcock and Elizabeth Prose of Madison, Wis.; two sisters: Mary Ellen Hunnicutt, of Albuquerque; and LaDonna Jones, of Claremore; a granddaughter, Mary Beth Hitchcock, of Sterling; four grandsons: Scott Seifert, Jr., of Windermerel; James Paul Hitchcock, William Wheeler Hitchcock, and Ethan Lee Hitchcock, all of Sterling.

She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents: Carl and Helen Reid, and Mary and Edward Whitewolf; a brother, and a sister, Peggy J. Walton.

With the institutional support of the Ministry of Culture of the Municipality of Buenos Aires and the authorization of the Metrovías company, “Objetivos Moviles/Moving Targets” will be exhibited on the Metrovias train system in Argentina On Friday February 29, 2008. The print action will take place between the station Federico Lacroze and Station F. Moreno of the railroad Gral. Urquiza (stations that unite Proyecto’ace, International Center for Visual Arts in South America to the Centro de Producción y Edición Gráfica de Buenos Aires (Litho Workshop in Saénz Peña), a group of 25 artists and John Hitchcock will carry large banner prints through the train cart system (Metrovias) in Buenos Aires. Each banner will have several images of North America, South America and Caribbean artists works. 50 young up and coming artists (25 from South America and 25 from North America) and 50 established artists were invited to participate (complete list below). The banners will be exhibited as large flags to hang in two spaces in Argentina the Proyecto’ace Studios and Centro de Producción y Edición Gráfica de Buenos Aires.

MOVING TARGETS involves presenting the print medium in a specific and meaningful way. This proposal is for an international print exhibition about social concerns moving via public transportation across borders. This concept ties to the rich tradition that printmaking serves as a vehicle for expression of discontent and critique. The works of Goya’s Disasters of War series to the works of José Posada and recently to Leon Golub spoke to their times through these means. The distinctiveness of the project is that the context becomes the literal vehicle. The first exhibition of this project on the train crossed the German-Polish border to show the images as commentary and visions. MOVING TARGETS is the project title and term (to be translated to German, Polish, and now Spanish (Objetivos Moviles) to signify the difficulty in stopping something (shooting down–in military terms). They are presented under the title “Moving Targets” to demonstrate the potential of artistic prints as agents promoting reflection and change.

I worked with Justin Strom and his students at the Univ. of Maryland West Gallery to create a multi-media print installation in three days.
